This is a piece of classic Terlingua Calcite for sale. It’s from the Little 38 Mine in Terlingua, Texas. It’s small fist size, and weighs just under a pound. The Little 38 Mine was a mercury mine where the calcite was overburden, or waste material. The mine owner reclaimed it in late 2004 to early 2005. Most of the tailings were crushed and trucked away for road construction, or leveled and covered up with a foot or two of fill dirt. Very little of this classic fluorescent material has come out of the mine since then.
This piece has all the characteristics of this classic material. The fluorescent responses are all there: pink under long wave ultraviolet (u.v.) light, purple under mid-wave u.v., and blue under short wave. It also has the striking blue phosphorescence or afterglow. The phosphorescence lasts for several seconds after exposure to short wave or mid-wave u.v. It even has some triangular areas of bright fluorescence that we see in many, but not all of these pieces.
The piece measures approximately 3¼ x 3¼ x 2¼ inches and weighs 15.9 ounces. This classic, just under a pound piece of Terlingua Calcite is SOLD.
